Cheap digital cameras aren't necessarily bad. However you do need to be sure of what you want when you set out to buy a discounted model. It's not necessary to buy the most expensive SLR camera if all you want is to take casual pictures. So if you only want pictures to put on your web site or to e-mail to friends and family a cheaper model will do just fine.

Cheap digital cameras are likely to be simple to use point-and-shoot models. SLR cameras with interchangeable lenses are usually used by career professionals or advanced amateurs. These models are getting cheaper and many consumers are tempted by their many features and quality. These cameras are likely to cost about $3000 when you add up extra lenses, batteries and other useful gadgets.

The Canon EOS 10D is cheaper than many SLR cameras but it is very complex to operate and not recommended for novices. If you use this camera as a point-and-shoot device your pictures are likely to be worse than on a model designed for this purpose. Cheap digital cameras are in the $100 to $200 range and definitely will not include a complex SLR model.

Nonetheless cheap digital cameras can be a lot of fun to own and use. You don't have to be an expert to use a point-and-shoot model and the quality of the pictures is more than adequate for a web site or to share with friends and family.

Cheap digital cameras will typically have a lower megapixel rate than more expensive models. Megapixels are the "dots" that make up a complete image. For web pages and e-mailing you will be fine with 1.3 megapixels. This is actually five times more than you need for a reasonable image. If you want better quality then 4 megapixels is a better bet.

The best cheap digital cameras are those that allow you to manually set aperture and shutter speed and focus. On cheaper cameras they are not as user-friendly as automatic SLR's but they are a good feature to have. Some cheaper models also have a movie mode with sound. While the quality is not likely to be excellent it is a fun way to record family memories.
